I see it more and more alongside things that aren't funny to anybody. Is it supposed to be friendly? Cutesy?

Yes -- yes -- I know what it's supposed to stand for.

It just doesn't seem to have much relationship to that anymore.

See especially:

Good Question.
I think it's become a space filler to show appreciation and that my message is meant nicely (in case someone might take it the wrong way). I think it's largely lost it's original meaning.

Yes, because I play a lot of games and it is a quick way to be friendly and polite. It means laughing out loud and while the cute smiley laughing comes across much more human like, it isn't available in lots of environments. Like this. Smile.

It means Laughing Out Loud. When people use it they mean that they are responding to something the other person said that they thought was funny.

Or if you said something funny to them, you use it. It's like saying "I'm just kidding" or I said something silly. You only say it to friends who understand what it means. Yes, friendly.

Yes. I use "Lol" all the time. It's a habit I guess. I do it even when the things that people say aren't funny.

Well if they LOL then they think it is funny or they wouldn't be LOL. What is not funny to you is funny to them. Maybe these people have a good sense of humor. I'd much rather see people LOL than to see innuendos such as fu, or FTS.

I use it all the time when something's funny, to convey to the other person/people that it is funny and I'm laughing or it made me laugh.

However, I have heard of people using it for "Lots Of Love"......

Laugh out loud is what it stands for but I like to think of it as Lots of Laughs.

In my opinion, it's the closest online thing to a smile.
