My little brother-in-law needs help with his algebra. It's been a long time since I've used algebra, so could someone help me figure out how I would go about solving a problem like this:

3x = 1/4

(three times X = one-fourth)

Solving for X, of course. Thank you!!!

Do the opposite operation to isolate x. You have 3 times x, so you want to divide both sides by 3. 1/4 divided by 3 turns into 1/4 times 1/3, to give you an answer of x = 1/12.

if you have x/3 (or something similar) in another problem, you want to multiply to isolate the x. Good luck!

Original Equation: 3X = 1/4

Step 1: 1/3 * 3X = 1/4 * 1/3

(by multiplying both sides of the equation by 1/3, you isolate the X on the left side of the equation. This is like multiplying both sides of the equation by 1, which doesn't change the equation's solution. It just allows you to manipulate the numbers and variables.

Step 1 result: X = 1/12

The answer to the problem is X = 1/12.

Since 1 divided by 12 equals 0.08333, an acceptable answer to this problem is X = 0.08333.

multiply by the reciprocal

1/3 * 3/1X=1/4* 1/3

X = 1/12

Make X alone in one hand side, using Times or divide or anything else.
At this case divide both by 3.
X=1/12
