what have you learned new about your own cultural history?

Intersted in learning if or what new things people have learned about their own cultural history? Trying to collect data for a project...any help would be greatly appreciated.

I learned a few years ago that my grandfather 'may' have been a famous British author. My father told my sister this just before he died when it was too late for me to ask for details. We don't know who the fathers of my parents were.

I also found out recently while doing research for my memoirs that my home town, Derby, was founded in 64 A.D. It started out as a Roman camp.
