It makes them feel they are superior in some way, as they are very bitter about themselves, and feel the need to put other people down in order to make themselves feel worthy. It's nasty and unnecessary, and frankly quite childish.
If someone writes insulting things to you, just ignore them, and know that you are much better than them because you don't allow bitterness and anger to control you.

Pure bad manners.
If that has happened to you just ignore them. If it happens on Yahoo Answers it is because they feel big when they insult someone as they know they are safe behind a mask of anonymity. We do not know each other here and people who are cruel and hurtful can say what they want and get away with it.
Just keep asking questions...It's the only way to learn, and don't be put off by ignorant people.

I think it's because people have usually been taught that their opinions & ideas are stupid, so why even bother.
Asking questions about something you don't understand is even stupider, sooooo we automatically get defensive.
It's easier than taking the risk of being vulnerable. FYI, answering this question has brought up memories from my childhood that were not pleasant. I constantly have to remind myself that I am an adult & people who belittle & degrade, are themselves the vulnerable & scared ones.
I choose to allow people to be who they are & that includes myself. If someone chooses to be insulting because they don't understand something I can realize that it has nothing to do with me, it is about them & their inability to have an adult conversation.
Didn't mean to get soooo carried away, but, there it is!

They are outside their "Comfort Zone," and this coping mechanism (the need to insult) helps to restore a sense of balance and control for them.
