He did run, in 1980 I believe. Chapaquidick (sorry for spelling) was always going to be too much of a burden for him. I'm quite liberal, but I think it was an adequate disqualification myself.

He did run in 1980, winning 10 primaries against Carter. See:

He did run in 1980 but ended up withdrawing from the race - not because of any Kennedy superstition thing but because Chappaquidick was still a haunting thing for a lot of Americans and I think he feared the questions would get really ugly. (In the late 60s or early 70s, Ted Kennedy drove his car off of a bridge in the middle of the night into the Chappaquidick river. There was a woman in the car with him named Mary Jo Kopechnik -who was not his wife and he was married - and everyone speculates that Ted had been drinking. Long story short, the car went under with Mary Jo in it and she died. Plus there was all sorts of shady stuff that went on in the immediate aftermath of her tragic death). So Ted ran for Prez in 1980, withdrew, and hasn't run since.

Ted Kennedy was responsible for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne when he drove off the Dike Bridge in Chappaquiddick? Then he tried to cover it up.

His wife was enrolled in a substance abuse clinic for alcoholism and one of his kids has had drug problems.

These are all negative points when someone is running for the highest office in our land.

Also, maybe he doesn't want to end up like his brothers, John F. Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy.

Too many personal problems and already too many assassinations in his family. I think also he was not a good by the party bosses.

Definitely it was due to the circumstances surrounding the accident at Chappaquiddick. (July 19, 1969).

He did run or at least he tried. He didn't get the Democratic Nomination, Mondale did. Mondale lost to Regan.
