People are saying the new lower gas prices will help the Republicans. The Republicans sure helped the gas prices, so it's only fair! Remember, gas prices are still 50-75% higher than they were when voters (or the Supreme Court) put two Oil Executives into the White House.

Bush/Cheney have been the best thing to happen to oil companies since the "oil shortage" of the early 70's. Under their administration, oil company profits have shattered all previous records. On top of that, their taxes on those profits have been cut by billions of dollars by this administration, making them even more money. Oil companies would love to keep Republicans in power.

Do you think it is a coincidence that gasoline prices conveniently fell just weeks before the election?

Do you really believe they will stay "low" after the election is over, especially if Republicans still control the Senate and Congress?

Guess they think we're all pretty stupid. I sure hope they're not right. Your thoughts?

odandme... nothing you said in your answer responded to any of the facts in my question. Should we stop "whining" and let the oil companies and the Bush administration rape us because gas prices are higher elsewhere? I don't think so, but you are entitled to your opinion.

fantastic... It is true that Bush can't directly control oil prices, though he does provide them with rapacious profits by his energy policy (which was, not coincidentally, decided in secret closed door meetings with Cheney and oil executives). I never said he could, or did. The point is that the Oil companies set their own prices, and have (in my opinion, and by all logic) lowered them pre-election in order to keep Republicans in power and continue thier record profits.

FOR THE RECORD: I misstated the oil company tax cuts in my question. Their tax cuts are hundreds of millions, not billions... assuming, of course, that you only count the corporate taxes on their profits, and not the tax cuts for the wealthy stock holders, which puts tens or hundreds of millions more dollars in their pockets.

odandme... Thanks for your opinion. you are right, that you're entitled to your opinion and to speak your mind, especially when that's what I asked you to do! Touche, sir, and thanks for your response!

el mero... One of the worst things that could happen would be for the government to take over the oil companies, particularly under the Bush/Cheney administration. I agree with you about that. But I do not believe that the leaders elected by the PEOPLE should set national energy policy in cahoots and in secret meetings with the industry they're supposed to be controlling, and refuse to make the records public. They do work for the PEOPLE, not the oil companies, right? Nor do I think they should give the oil companies additional huge profits in the form of tax cuts at the expense of the American People, and of the average citizen.

VERDE... You can think I'm stupid if you like, it doesn't matter. But I am not spouting "lib propoganda" only facts and the speculation that logically follows from it. Gas prices always go up in the summer and over holiday weekends, to be sure (price gouging), but they have NEVER taken such a drastic turn downward as they have this year, again, just before the election. I did not say or even suggest that Bush/Cheney "own" the oil company executives, quite the contrary. They are in bed together and help each other, and the evidence you ask for is in the fact that the oil company executives in the White House set energy policy in secret consultations with other oil executives. Unprecedented, and a very obvious abuse of power. And you ask me to explain why even though you have a Democratic leader (governor?) in your state, gas prices are still up. You promised if I did you'd listen to me. Okay... Oil policy is set at the NATIONAL level, not at the state level. Can you hear me now?

VERDE... As you can see, I did answer your question. You should try not to be so filled with hatred for everyone who has a different viewpoint. What do you think you are, a fundamentalist? :-)

while i am in direct agreement with your statements i fear the worst, i still see "W" stickers on lots of cars everything from luxo-barges to KIA and Hyundai products. when spoken to these people are so dense that they only vote the party line. i call them rubber stamp republicans, what i expect is that after the elections all energy prices will skyrocket, what i hope is that enough democrats will be elected to quickly put the robber barons in check. i fear that it will all be for naught ["you can't fix stupid"]

I am apprehensive about it too, I am also wondering if interest rates and stock market are poised for pre-election also. I guess I don't really know, but I am sure not buying any SUV's or stock or bonds right now. I could be missing the boat (but maybe it is the Titanic I am missing). But it is not in question that the 'low' gas prices will give the Reps more votes then they would have if the gas prices were still over $3. I think there is a real possibility that higher energy costs will return and will cause migration to the south part of the country to increase at a more rapid rate than is already happening, lack of air conditioning is not (in most cases) life threating but lack of (affordable) heat in a cold climate is.

I've spent the last 11 years living in Europe, and gas prices in America are lower by half or better than the rest of the world. Can we find something else to whine about?

No, I don't think it's a coincidence that gas prices have gone down before elections. No, I don't think they'll stay low. Yes, they think we're all stupid.

The only question I felt worth responding to in the first place was your last one... "Your thoughts?" My response to that was and still is, "lets find something else to whine about." Use your hard-won freedom and vote Republican if you think that will help, just like I used my hard-won right to my opinion. That's what makes America so great!

I just think it's funny that people say that gas has risen sooo much since Old Man Bush was in office because of him and his son. I mean, really what do you expect? Old Man Bush was elected in 1989, that was about 17 years ago, of course the prices went up. In 1989 minimum wage was under $4 an hour, now it's over $7. Things change in 20 years....

I also think it's funny to hear people say lately, "Wow, gas is really cheap," when it's still $2.35 a gallon. It's still outrageous, but I guess we take what we can...

The president or republicans don't own oil companies or tell them what to charge so I don't see why everyone thinks oil prices are directly related to politics other than the fact that the places where a lot of it come from are in turmoil. (but heck they've been in turmoil there for decades at least!

they might think we are stupid, but i think YOU are stupid. Seriously this is all liberal *** propaganda, and you just want to find something else to ***** about! isn't that right???

did you realize that summer is over? or has it not turned cold in your neck of the woods? that, my friend, means less demand therefore prices dropping. Go do research, seriously, it happens EVERY YEAR.

Also, where is your "proof" that he owns these oil execs? That is sooooo stupid. Gas prices will go up when the holidays come around again, and that willbe SURPRISE SURPRISE, AFTER the election!!!

get a grip
go ahead and give me a thumbs down, but you REALLY need to do some research.
your blind liberalism is scary.

the gas prices suck, there is no doubt about it... however nobody, not LIBERALS either, have done **** to stop it now have they????

and explain this one to me, buddy.... the average price I pay in gas is 30 cents HIGHER than the national average and GUESS WHAT? I HAVE A DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP IN MY STATE.... so seriously, EXPLAIN THAT, and maybe i'/ll listen to you. except im gonna go ahead and chalk it up to more taxes, more cost to get here, and higher demand, the way EVERYTHING works.

Yah most people are that dumb.
I read a newspaper article over a month ago that said OPEC was watching the oil prices and would wait until early to mid fall to decide whether to change oil prices.

yes, the republicans have lowered gas prices just to get votes. they also ended terrorism in the US for the same reason and have given us the greatest stock market ever and a low unemployment rate, a booming economy and lowered taxes for everyone. i dont know who they think they are fooling, i'm voting democrat.

I totally agree. I just paid 2.60 a gallon, and I'm supposed to feel like I got a bargain because the price came down from 3.30 Gee, what a deal.

Why don't you and your lib friends start a bill that will take away control of all the oil companies in America and have it be run by the government. Isn't it the communistic dream you liberals have? To have everything run by the government.
