What does "the same sinking feeling that you get when you dread going to school" mean in?

I resumed my search for some other books but then a loud bell rang that was supposed to signal that closing time of the library! It was so loud and so unexpected that it completely took me by surprise. I must say it was the same sinking feeling tha you get when you dread going to school.
