Measure the width of the opening minus 1/2" write that down first. Now measure the height minus about 3/4" and write that down second. Now round those numbers down to the nearest full inch, and always express the size as width X height.

It will depend on if you are installing a replacement (typically vinyl) window or an entire new wood window. Sometimes it depends on the type of window you are taking out also. If you want to remove an old wood window and put in another just like it, the better way to do this is to remove the interior trim pieces. Then you can get an accurate measurement of the existing unit. Measure the width (side to side) first, then the height (top to bottom). Your local home store or a window supplier can take those measurements and find the correct unit to fit the opening. If you are installing a replacement window in the old wood frame, well it would take alot longer to explain the correct way to measure and order the right window. You'd be better off just having someone come out to do it for you. A local handyman would be cheaper than a window company or distributor. If you are willing to add more information to your question I can watch and give a little more advice. Good luck with this project.

i would check with your contractor or whoever you are getting your windows through and ask them. some mfgs. will want the "rough opening" and some will want the "finished opening". It can get confusing if you go in with the wrong measurement.

If you need to ask, you do not have the skills needed to install the window properly.
