replacing organs is not enough. You have a limited number of times you can regrow all your cells. You have a limited number of stem cells, and a limited number of times you can create hormones. Over time the synapses in your nervous system break down and become weak. And you are constantly loosing brain cells and brain cells never regenerate, eventually your brain would stop telling your organs to function and you will just die.

Because, even in a vegetative state, cell division goes on. Each time a cell divides the ends of the DNA (telomeres) are shortened slightly until eventually important information starts to be lost from the DNA, so cell reproduction becomes imperfect. This causes aging and eventually death.

because by being moribund a body does not engage in, for example, activity or, independent breathing. both of these make a body more vulnerable and make an immune system less able to respond. There are also problems with secondary circulation and heart response when prone.

If your'e in a vegative state you cannot feed yourself so you will slowly die of starvation. If you are being kept alive on machines and drips etc., then inactivity will mean your organs etc will gradually break down because they are hardly being used.

interesting question , a person in a vegetative state is not subject to normal wear and tear so why couldn't they live beyond normal expectations ?

I suppose it is because through lack of use the body eventually becomes to weak to function properly ?
