NEWSFLASH: Ferrets ARE classified EXOTICS in the vet world, so are guinea pigs. Don't ask me, just one of those things. Now wipe that egg off of your face and listen:
First off, what's creepy about me answering ferret questions? I know a few things and love to share them to hopefully improve the lives of a few ferts and/or the relationship they have with their hooman beans. I'm involved in ferret groups, real time and online and do rescues and transports.
Now, to you potty question:
Rarely will you be able to get a ferret to go all the way back to the cage to poop if he's in the middle of playing. To them it's like this: if they cannot see a litter box in front of them, it doesn't exist.
I have four ferrets and they don't go back to the cage, one of my females does sometimes.
Put litter boxes in the locations your fert has picked out as great potty spots. The rest of the corners put food or toys or bedding in. I use old t-shirts for bedding. They're washable and ferrets love digging and sleeping in them. My ferrets have one spot, right by the door they won't give up on. I'm thinking that it might be a marking behaviour since that is where all the new scents enter their little world. I'm still trying to train them NOT to poop there(imagine walking into the room barefoot and unsuspecting and stepping into a cold pile......yummy, pleasant!!), but until I am successful I simply put a thick layer of newspaper down. It absorbs the mess and keeps my carpets clean.
Ferrets will never be 100% like cats, they need frequent refresher courses. I think it's a small price to pay for all the entertainment they provide. Look at it this way, at least the piles are little bitty ones, :)
And please, do NOT hit your ferret anywhere on it's body and NEVER rub it's nose in poop. That's sick and doesn't accomplish a thing.
Don't let him out of the cage until he went and when you see him backing up into a corner while he's out, grab him and put him in the closes litter box. You will definitely need more litter boxes.
Praise him when he succeeds, better luck next time if he doesn't.
Good luck with your fuzzy, enjoy!!!
PS: Sorry I had to put that here, but you won't accept IM's or e-mail.

Yeah, don't worry bout it. My rats are seen the same too. Not worth stressing over! If you do have ferrets go and play with them. Ferrets are awesome and will make you forget being angry pretty quickly! :P

You are right I had give away my two because the place we moved considered them exotic. The are thieving, sometime destructive and always inquisitive little balls of fun

i think of you need to get a sugar glider. I even have 2 , and that they are great! they do no longer look to be as frustrating to shield as maximum persons say! you need to have sufficient time to spend with them in spite of in case you do visit college. college in basic terms takes like 6 hours of the day. A sugar glider will bond to you and love you perpetually!
