i mean how do i tell if a relation is a function or not

An equation is linear if it only has x in it, not x^2 or x to any other higher power. (By 'x' I mean any variable, x, y, z, etc.)

I'm not sure there's any way just by looking at ONE ordered pair to tell if it's a solution to a function or not. Sorry, the first part of your question has me a little confused.

You need a set of ordered pairs, not just one. You look at ALL of the x values (the first number) If any of them duplicate it is not a function

An equation is linear if you can put it in this form: Ax+By = C so no x^2 or any powers, no absolute values, no varaiables in denominators
