Straight jackets are not used in New York State government funded CPEP's (comprehensive psychiatric emergency programs.) Restraints, however, are still used. Both the chemical (anti-psychotic drugs), and physical (leather, Velcro, sheet restraints.) The least restrictive and most therapeutic method is used to administer care in the emergency setting. With over three years experience as a psychiatric technician it is always difficult to see a person placed in restraints. I have seen where it is necessary, but that does not make it easy. In many circumstances I have also seen the high level of care given to these patients.
