Yes, it was a good invention (matter of opinion) since prior to that time long distance messenging was sent by mail which could take up to weeks now long distance calling is only a phone call away.

Alexander Graham Bell is generally recognized in the U.S. as the inventor of the telephone, but some people don't agree.
But he WAS the first to patent his device.

It was a good invention because it allowed instant oral communication at a distance.

For example, the legend is that when A.G. Bell first used his telephone, it was to call his assistant, Watson, for help after spilling some acid in his lab. (Don't know for sure if that is true).

Interesting trivia...
Did you know that a very crude FAX machine was actualy invented BEFORE the telephone? It was designed to work with telegraph lines. Never really was used much, though.
