A pair of dress slacks and a nice, formal button-up shirt, no suits, or tuxedos-too dressed up. Simple and gentleman like.

A suit & tie - something nicer than what he'd wear to the office.
Think wedding attire - minus a tux or tails.
The invite isn't black tie.
