When applying to college how much of a disadvantage does going to a small, rural high school give me? I'm in the top 20% of my class but my class is only about 140 and I heard colleges are less likely to accept applicants from smaller schools.

Well it has its advantages and disadvatages because there are less students and more hands on teaching. the downside is less questions being asked.

Some colleges don't like to accept some HS students but a lot would because you don't had to fight to get the help you need in some subject's as big HS students did. My daughter went to HS and it was some and she got in college and she was in the top 20% so it is possible to do.

One disadvantage: there might not be as many courses offered - maybe fewer foreign languages, or fewer AP courses. Some of this can be gotten around by taking courses online from other venues like colleges.

There are also advantages. You'll get more personal attention from your teachers.

I suggest that you don't stress over attending a small HS. I think it's more important to "stress" over SAT scores, extra-curriculars, and your Personal Statement. =) ENJOY HS WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
