Since this doesn't factor, you must use the Quadratic Formula

so -10 +- the square root of (100 - 4*4 )divided by 2 which makes it -10 +- 2sqrt 21 divided by 2. Simplify one more time by 2 and the final answer is -5 +- sqrt 21

x^2 + 10x + 4 = 0

Quadratic formula:

x = (-10 +/- sqrt(100-16))/2
= -5 +/- sqrt(21)

x^2+10x+4+0
x^2+2.x.5+5^2+4=5^2
(x+5)^2=25-4
x+5=square root(21)
x=square root(21)-5

You have the fun of doing the quadratic formula.

(-b +- sq rt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)

a = 1
b = 10
c = 4

Have fun. :)
