Start by realizing that you don't really connect directly to the Internet. You connect your Mac to the router and you connect your router to your ISP's server. If you have been using your Mac to connect to your service without the router, it will be configured for your service now but not necessarily how you need it to be when connecting to the router. Check in the TCP/IP control panel to see if it is setup for (1) DHCP or (2) PPPoE.

(1) If it is set for DHCP, leave well enough alone and skip down to "Router setup".
(2) If it is set for PPPoE, write down all the settings (username, password) for later reference. Now you will need to make a configuration that will connect the Mac to the the router (File > New Configuration, I think). Give it a name such as "Router" and make it DHCP, and then save it or maybe you tell it to "Make active", something like that.

Router setup: Open the booklet that came with your router. It will mention the IP address for the router (such as 192.168.1.1 or something similar). Open the browser (Safari or Firefox if you are smart). Type the IP address in the address space and press Enter/Return. The router instruction booklet will also mention how to set the router to connect to your service. If your service uses DHCP, it will almost certainly have that type of configuration out-of-the-box so you will only need to skip down to "Resetting the DSL/cable modem box". If your service uses PPPoE, pull out that paper where you wrote down the PPPoE settings and follow the router booklet to put the settings into the router.

Resetting the DSL/cable modem box: Turn off the power or unplug the adapter transformer for the DSL/cable modem box. Wait 40 seconds. Power back on. Now see if your browser loads a page. If not, power off both router and DSL/cable modem box. Wait two minutes. Power on the DSL/cable modem box. Wait 40 seconds. Power on the router.

Go in the Apple menu on the top left of your screen, click on Control Panel, then open TCP/IP.

In Connect via, choose Ethernet, then select DHCP in Configure and empty all other fields.

Then you can start your router's setup, just read the manual.
