why does a penny sink in water but a cruise ship doesn't?

it has to do with the water displacement. a penny is flat and has no surface on the sides to hold out the water to displace it. A ship can hold a lot of water outside of its body, so it displaces water and therefore (by laws of buoyance and gravity) does not float.

a penny sinks in water because it does not have enough weight to float but a cruise ship will stay on water because it is heavy (ie people are in it) and it can float....

it's is just like floating when you swim

hope i helped

because a ship is a bouyant force.... A ship is less dense than water. A penny is more dense than water.
