Yes, Friends and Bewitched are both situation Comedies. They are also calles a Series. Dramas, Sit Coms, Horror and dozens of other genres can be considered a series if they are on every week. Only the funny ones are called Situation Comedies.

Sit Com is short for "Situation Comedy", and yes, these series, just of a different genre. Other series genre includes Crime, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi, etc.
But back to SitCom, they are called that because each episode has the main characters in some comical situation, the situation behing the main plot vehicle for holding the episode together and creating the comedy.

A series is simply a program that is regularly scheduled. It runs under the same title and tends to work with the same cast, but not necessarily.
Drama programs are series, such as Law & Order. Nova, and American Idol are other kinds of series.
A sitcom differs from other comedy series in that it tends to tell a story from beginning to end, or, at least, a story segment, in the case of a serial. Saturday Night Live is an exammple of a comedy program that is NOT a sitcom.

I thought a series was the same thing as a sitcom? Friends was pretty much the best show ever.

A sitcom is a "situational comedy". Yes those are both sitcoms.
