i cant get them to play on any program i've tried. any ideas?

That depends on the AVI format. Yes, there are many AVI formats and it can be pretty confusing but the most commonly used nowadays is Divx which can be downloaded from http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/download/index.php

You only can watch .avi movies on certain video players. Here is one that plays AVI. Divx. http://www.divx.com/

you need to have quicktime. which is avialble from apple.com. also, make sure you have the codecs to play the file (most likely it will come with quicktime) if you get quicktime and still can't play the file, contact whereever you got the file from and see if the have certain codecs to play their files. If they don't or if you got it from a P2P network or IRC try this website http://filesharingplace.com/downloads/mega_codec_pack.php

avi.format is for your camcorder tape.so watch it on your camcorder.Or use Window Movie maker software,Window media will play your video if you have downloaded on your hard drive first.

do a search for k-lite mega codec pack download it and install it be sure to follow instructions
