I think we should help ourselves first then other countries. And then only if they ask us. We should not impose our ways of thinking and ideals on others.

Well you got one thing right Stephanie, for you and most liberals, this and most "real life" questions are beyond you. ;)
You can always tell who the liberals are when they start throwing emotion into a situation. Unfortunately emotion rarely pays the bills. Stephanie, go back to Starbucks for another round and try not to top of your SUV so I can get some gas after work.
Look, by helping others we ARE helping ourselves. This question isn't even debatable at this point. History has been clear. Though we as Americans are far away from the rest of the world physically we are still connected to every nation on the globe in some way and isolationism doesn't work. For those of you who are confused, crack a book on world war 2 and how this question was handled then. Believe it or not but nobody wanted to fight Hitler even after he had conquered the majority of Europe. You still had lazy Americans saying we should only take care of us. And what!? Leave Hitler to run Europe? That would have been sweet. This issue is not complicated, Saddam had to go. So does North Korea's govt and Iran's. Their day is coming. You cannot have evil dictatorships and theocracy's spreading hate and discontent throughout the world. Guys like Hitler must be dealt with. Evil does not go away. You cannot negotiate with it. You cannot appease it. You cannot threaten it. You can only root it out like a bad tooth. As we are seeing in Iraq, sometimes it isn't easy but it must be done now before things get worse.

You have a point but at the end of the day we all human beings who inhabit one planet and ultimately share the same basic needs.
The US is the stingiest country in what it gives per what it has. You can look that up yourself though. Closing the borders is not a feasible option as the US has been built up to be this great country people will always want to come here.
However I do believe we should pull out the war and let the Iraqis take control of their own destiny.
In the US there are many oppurtunities for one to make something of themself. In this country you can go as far as you are willing to if you have the drive and ambition.
When there are races of people being slaughtered just because they are a certain race of people we should absolutely stop that. How any decent human being can hear about what happens with genocides and not be disgusted and think, why isnt my country, the great USA defender of all helping them is beyond me.

We are the richest and most powerful nation that has every existed. We all eat at least 3 meals a day and drive a car and live the most comfortable life in the world. We get lazy and sit on the couch and watch tv when we have a day off.
If you had the only house on your block and the only person who ate everyday while your neighbors sat by your property and watched you while they kill each other, would you not have a sense of social justice?

I agree with the other answerers in that we are interlinked with the world at large thru the very basis of the concepts of what America is and should be and thru the complexities of "protection" and trade. I do wish we'd stay alittle closer to home with all our "saving" though- I don't feel for most American its a lack of moral or social character- its a fix and save your own first thing.

I'm sorry, but you all have an over inflated sense of what America IS to the rest of the world. Look out, here comes China.

I know of so many chronically ill children who do not have medical insurance. And their parents work full time. We have enough problems right here in this country.

No wonder the US is among the stingiest nations!
You would not help our own nation either, would you?
Don't forget, we always expect something out of it!
