no i agree they are stupidly loud but i think the reason they are is because most drivers on the road are at an unheard of level of stupid themselves and need to be told loudly to get the heck out of the way

In busy built up areas or on the motorway they are not loud enough. A number of times I've only known they were coming up behind as I use my mirrors frequently and saw the lights before hearing the siren. In today's litigant culture it is no suprise they make them as loud as possible to ensure no-one can say they didn't hear them. Some years ago a directional siren was being tested which was more targetted ahead of the emergency vehicle. These were very effective though I don't know if they were ever introduced widely. If you live near an ambulance, fire and police station, there should be special traffic lights that allow them to leave their station with priority and without the need for sirens blaring. Some consideration should be given to local residents though and I have noticed that in my area, the services are pro-active and only use their sirens when they need to i.e. approaching busy junctions or traffic rather than having them blaring unecessarily.

You might think so until you get in a situation like I did last spring. A tornado was bearing down toward my house very late at night. It was hailing, and the wind was so intense that I couldn't hear much of anything. It was so dark outside that I certainly couldn't see anything. I knew there was a terrible storm, but didn't yet realize that it was an actual tornado. But through all of that noise, I heard the tornado siren and was able to take cover.

As for fire, police, and ambulance sirens, the same principle applies. They're loud for a very good reason.

no,they're not loud enough given the scenario that some people have their windows completely closed, air conditioner and music turned on full blast with 2 high tech subwoofers for extra oomph don't really notice the exterior siren sounds.

I personally don't think they are loud enough. I have seen cars holding up an emergency vehicle because they had their BOOM BOX or TUNES turned up so high they didn't hear it But when they got pulled over no one could understand why ( but officer I didn't hear them)

I think you are because even though they're stupidly loud like you say, people still claim that they don't hear it when they "accidentally" ram in to the ambulance

Because there are so many idiots who won't get out of their way. I can't believe the jerks that drive through intersections and won't stop for an ambulance. They ought to picture someone they love in that ambulance in a life or death situation. It astounds me how callous we've become.

They are loud for one purpose.....to get one's attention. If they get your attention, then they are working as designed.

Remember to give the right of way to emergency vehicles.

not unless you have your family in there and their life is on the line, and you would want everybody to move out of the way. So I don't think they are loud.
