Ok, every now and then I turn on my PC and for some reason completely unknown to me: the icons, "start" bar, and installed keyboard multimedia ( you know, for buttons that say "play" or a volume knob, or a print button.) driver and the keyboard itself doesnt appear, and doesnt work, I have to log off and log back on for my icons to appear again, and the same thing goes for my keyboard, I had to log off and back on again just to type this. Also once my keyboard with the multimedia button interface driver installed doesnt type, the multimedia buttons dont work and I have to reinstall it to get them to work again! OK so heres the question: WHY THE HECK IS THIS HAPPENING?

Sometimes a startup file becomes damaged or even goes missing. If this happens, weird things can happen when you start the computer. You can run a system file check if you have your install CD. The scan will check your files and if any are damaged or missing, you'll be prompted to insert the CD and a fresh copy of needed files will be copied from the disk onto the hard drive.

Make sure you close all running programs so you're at the desktop. Click start > run > type in "sfc /scannow" > OK (no quotes and notice the space between sfc and /scannow.) The scan could take over an hour depending on what it finds. This usually cures about 90% of Windows system problems.

If the SFC doesn't fix it, you can try a Repair Install. You won't lose any personal settings or programs except for Windows Updates that came out after your install disk was manufactured (including SP2 if it's not on the install disk.) A Repair Install will usually cure 95% of all problems with Windows. This link will give you instructions and screen shots of what you'll actually see:

I selected XP Pro but the steps are identical for XP Home. If you have a different Windows OS this same web site will guide you through those:

skris88: "With XP, defrag was a manual process unless you created an auto-schedule for it. With Vista the auto-schedule is preset." Wrong. XP does a defrag as part of the System Idle Process. Once started, it won't stop even if the PC ceases to be idle. "The second feature about Vista that I think is wrong is the auto-indexing. If you have a super-fast machine the indexing process is probably fine." This is also a feature present in XP. And people wonder where all these Vista myths come from...

I'm also no good with computers, but I recently found a really great forum that has professionals and also general help from people who may have the same problems you do and are willing to help. The forum is called AumHa Forums and to ask a question you start here, (although you do have to register first)

Good Luck! They've helped me with a couple of problems in just the past few days that I would have had to call and WAIT for tech support on before I found this site.

go in "run" and type in msconfig with your hard drive letter and check to see what is running in startup. You should only have your antivirus checked to run in startup, uncheck all the others.
