I picked up an ancient coin at an antique store a while back. The only info I could find on it was that it's Byzantine and depicts Emperor Basil. I've searched several ancient coin sites and have seen several "similar" coins but not the exact one. Does anybody know of a database somewhere that I might find it and get some general info, possibly its value?

The authoritative guide on Byzantine coins is "Catalog of Coins in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection". This is a five part series of books, and are pretty expensive, (I only have 3 volumes so far). David Sears put out a great book "Byzantine Coins and Their Values" This is the authoritative price guide for Byzantine coins. If you can check out either of these from your library that is the way to go. Also good would be "Byzantine Coins" by Grierson, though it is not really a catalog. If you search for Basil, be aware that there were more than one. Basil II I believe was the most popular and effective rulers amongst the Basils.

There are some websites out there, you were already given the best. I would also suggest going to Vcoins.com and searching the dealer stores for the coin. Also, you could post a picture of the coins in the ByzantineCoins newsgroup on Yahoo and maybe someone can help.

There is a coin book out there on Byzantine coins, it is very pricey at $100.00. Best bet if you live in a large city is a library. You can keep looking for web sites. You can also scan it and see if Bob Reis will help. He owns Anything Anywhere. www.anythinganywhere.com or reisbiz@earthlink.net. In the coin paper Numismatic News, they have an answer man. You can send him a scan at answerman2@aol.com or send him a photo or a scan to: Coin Clinic, Numismatic News,700 E. State St.,Iola, WI 54990. Send a loose first class stamp for his answer. Hope this helps.
