Press and hold CTRL, ALT and type on the "3".
If it doesn't work, go to your control panel->Regional and language options->Languages tab->Details. In there make sure you select the proper settings for the language and Country code.

you have to change your language to English-UK. after you do that, depending on your computer model, you can change back and forth between the two languages and therefore be able to get a pound sterling sign. another way is to go to Microsoft word. right click on bullets and numbering. press customize. go to picture. then scroll to look for the sign you want

It could be a special function button.
Is it in a different colour? If so, look to activate the special BUTTONS (all those in different colours) by pressing one key (maybe Fn or something which is also in that colour).
Or it could be a languange thing. Try changing your regional settings to other countries....

Keep a text file with odd bits on your desktop. Just copy & paste them as needed. Here are a few, though I don't know what half of them are...
