I am a big dreamer and read alot about dreams / nightmares. There are many believes that they start way before the preschool period. Though you may hear many people say they start between the ages of 3 and 5 because thats when you start to develop fears. I think they start as newborns. If they are triggered by fears or tragic events then going from a warm, dark, wet atmosphere to a bright, loud, hot / cold, extremely different atmosphere is traggic enough to trigger nightmares.

Any time although it's hard for them to articulate that this is what's happened until they can communicate so many articles suggest age 2. When toddlers describe their nightmares they are generally spurred by fears of separation from you or a stressful or traumatic life event, such as getting lost.

BabyCentre explains the differences between nightmares and night terrors here:

http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/toddler/toddlersleep/142.html

and says that Night Terrors can start at around 9 months.

Dr.Spock's webpage says nightmares start between age 3 and 6 (although from experience this seems pretty late to me.) http://www.drspock.com/article/0,1510,4009,00.html

who knows? babies cant tell us if they have a bad dream. if you are worried that your baby is having bad dreams, i wouldnt. if baby is startled at night or during naps and wakes crying or screaming, try swaddling baby in blanket. babies want to feel secure like the were in the womb. when their arms and legs flail around, it startles them and they cry.
