I kind of agree. Except that I'd expand the reason to include all "passive" oral communication (radio, then TV, pop music, etc)...anything that makes it less necessary to write.
When you write, you're forced to look at how well you've organized your thoughts in black and white, right there for all to see. I think you're a little more careful and thoughtful about what you're presenting.
Very few of us talk as carefully as we write. I truly believe that if everything we wanted to say were written down for us to review before we could speak it, most of us would cancel most of what we're about to say!
So as we become a nation fixated on the opposite of thoughtful communication...the off-the-cuff soundbite if you will, we devalue thoughtfulness, reason, logic and consideration of others.
TV just reflects America's insatiable appetite for here-and-now titillation. If you're no longer concerned about looking smart, you're doomed to look stupid (whether in fact you are or not).

I agree. However, I do not think intelligent conversation is gone. I think the young people who choose to watch informative shows will still engage in stimulating conversations. However, the young people that choose to watch Parental Control on MTV or Best Paris Hilton Moments on VH1 are halting their intellectual growth by being concerned with trivial junk.
Promote intelligence.

It hasn't dumbed down anyone, it has just taught them that visual input is faster than character input. It is like Windows being much faster than Basic. You can either take advantage television to communicate your thoughts or not. But, it won't make you any dumber watching dumb shows than reading dumb scripts and books. If anything the computer has done more to dumb things up than television. Email has done more to create illiterates than television ever did.

Intelligent conversations are still out there. They are just few & far between now. So many people are honestly dumb in this world it is scary! Sometimes you feel yourself having to 'dumb down' just to talk to people. Its sad really.
Oh & P.S. I am Australian so its not just happening in America, trust me :)

well without tv it would be hard to see what is going on in the world because of news and kids wouldnt have an imagintaion and that is important. and also without television how would people advertise? i mean you could advertise with the radio but nobody listens to that part of the radio...news.....news....news who cares....but on tv you can make something creative, people watch it, enjoy it, and end up buying your product. Im not saying to sit there and watch tv all day cause you will kill lots of cells but i mean it is good to watch tv occasionally. so i think you are wrong. and plus its the computers that are hurting America. People are way into computers and they kill brain cells and its not good for them.i disagree with you on this one

that is just something to blame it all on. Society does not want to look at it self and admitted that that is just the way a majority of our society is. it is not that TV is making us dumber. it is that TV is mirroring what we live.
