Hypothetically writing,of course, damage could have occurred but if everything is fine then you got lucky. But hopefully nothing happens down the road to the transmission that could of been caused by the incident. HYPOTHETICALLY.

Just the loud noise as long as you got off the gas as soon as you noticed it! If you went over max revs for a long period of time, you could have some valve damage, but you would hear more noises now if that were true. You did not mention the year, so I have no idea if your engine will cut out at excessive RPM's. Most of the new cars have what is called a rev limiter. If such is the case, then you have zero in the way of damage. If you hear "ticky-ticky-ticky" from the top end, or your gas mileage goes in the toilet, or you start to burn oil, it's time to help the mechanic make his boat payment.

I don't think you caused ANY damage. When you dropped it into 3rd, all you did was speed up the rpm of the engine, required as you had it set on cruise. I assume you turned off the cruise soon after you did this. Even if you didn't, it still should be ok, as cars can take a certain amount of high rpm for awhile. But I wouldn't do it again either. Certainly not at 60 mph, while going up a hill.

Hypothetically, the sun gear could be damaged, the locking torque converter could have a damaged clutch, and/or the 3rd gear clutch pack could have suffered damage. I would continue to hypothetically drive the car and if it didn't make any more noise, then guess it's OK. Good luck.

It would probably beat you too it as it tried to maintain the speed set by you. But if you were to do it first, nothing would happen, except that if you manually touched the gas pedal, you would switch the cruise off anyway.

It should'nt hurt anything, afterall it could have shifted to 3rd on it's own while using the cruise on a steep uphill grade.
