What format is it in? (.mov, .avi., .wma...?)
Have you tried playing it in any other players? If it's not in .mov format, it won't play in Quicktime.
Try d/l'ing some other players, like DivX, Winamp or Windows Media Player.
If you still can't play it after that, you may need to download a codec. Come back to ask about that, if you don't know what it means. :)
Hope that helps! ^_^

Edit after Details:
It *is* in .mov? Hm. Are you getting any kind of error message? Is anything showing up on your screen (like, first frame of the movie, then it freezes)? Have you tried both: simply clicking on the file to play it, as well as going into the File menu in Quicktime, choosing "Open" and choosing the movie that way? Does anything happen either way when you do those two things?

You might have to set your DVD Player or default player (for everything) to a program like Windows Media Player, cuz it said that for me all the time, even though I did have Quicktime Player. It can also be because you don't have a DVD harddrive set up on your computer.

Good luck! ^_^
