Which is the chemical change? burning magnesium or melting a candle?

Burning magnesium changes the magnesium into magnesium oxide, which is a chemical reaction (oxidation). MELTING a candle (not burning it) only changes the state of the candle from a (semi) solid to a liquid, and does not involve a chemical change. The wax is still wax when you're done, it's just liquid. BURNING the candle, on the other hand IS a chemical change, just like the magnesium burning.

Burning magnesium is a chemical reaction. Melting a candle isn't because nothing in the chemical make up of the candle is changing...it's just a physical change.

Burning magnesium becuase a chemical change is a change that occurs when a substance changes composition by forming one or more substances. A melting candle does not do that.

Both are chemical changes. Burning magnesium produces heat and carbon dioxide and other harmful vapors. Burning a candle produces heat and releases carbon dioxide. Any time a chemical or substance changes from its original form to a different form a chemical change takes place.

magnesium since its an element it is a chemical change. a physical change can be a change of state but its still the same , you melt a candle it bacomes wax and back to the hardness of the candle

melting a candle is. The reason is that with melting a candle you are just change the state of the candle, where as with burning magnesium you are destroying it.

Burning magnesium (heat is absorbed by the magnesium, resulting in a relatively ireeversible change of state)

burning magnesium causies it to intereact with Oxygen therby changing it. A candle if it only melts the wax doesn't chemically alter the wax just changes its state.
