Pigtails, absolutely not!!!! I graduated from HS in 1958, and I can tell you that if we had seen anyone with pigtails other than at a Sadie Hawkins Day dance, we would have seriously wondered about their mental stability! The sweater would never have been worn tied over top. That started a couple of decades later. Twin sets, a cardigan with matching short sleeve pullover were in.
A small (approximately 12x12 in) square scarf of silk or chiffon tied around the neck with the points facing to the side was a common accessory. These scarfs were also worn tied around the pony tail, no bow, just knotted with the ends dangling to each side of the tail. A very long string of beads wound choker style around the neck with the excess knotted together at breast level was also "in". Just not both at the same time. You could also try to find a "cinch" belt. They are a 3''-4" belt of elastic. Any wide belt would do as well, but the "cinch" is more representative of the '50's. Button earrings are a '50's thing as well, not too large. All these things could be pink. Your bobby socks should be white, though, colored socks were "out". If you don't want to wear socks, you would need to find a pair of black "ballerina" flats. (similar to toe shoes, but with leather tops, regular soles and very low heels....no ribbon ties) Most girls in the '50's were'nt allowed to wear nylon stockings until they were about 16 and most of those stockings had seams. Pantyhose were not common until late 50's, early 60's.
Do you have the crinolines very full slips) necessary for the skirt? You should have 1 or 2 stiffly starched crinolines under it. The idea was for the skirt to stand out as far as possible from the body. We spent hours every night restarching and ironing those things to keep their shape!
That's about all I can think of/remember. Hit the GoodWill store. Happy hunting and have a great time!

Funny, scary, or cute costume? Funny, I would suggest a ceiling fan... write "go ceilings!" on a plain white t shirt. Or you could be a cereal killer, which is what I am this year. You could pin some little cereal boxes onto your shirt and stab the cereal boxes with plastic knives. :D Scary... you could be a zombie. Get a plain white shirt, or a shirt you won't use anymore. Wipe red paint all over it to look like hand marks and scratches... paint your face white or have some red marks on it. Cute... You could be a fairy or an angel... but that's only if you're a girl lol. I'm not sure what gender you are but if you're a guy I'm guessing you wouldn't want a cute costume. Best of wishes and have fun! -Fresh like Fruit

Try hunting down a string of pink beads, some 1/2" pink "pearl" earrings, and a 1" plastic bangle bracelet at Claire's. Also, a gaudy rhinestone lapel pin would be very cool. Wear lace-edged ankle socks to complete the look...

Pigtails were only worn by children, so if you don't mind looking like a very grown-up 6 year old, then it would be okay...

You might get some bubble gum (if you're allowed to chew it)
Some Cat-eye glasses
A broach or pin to wear on your sweater
Some eyelette baby doll socks that fold over at your ankle would be good too.
A cute little frame purse

Try wathcing the movie Grease if you can and see what they are all wearing. I know the "virgin pins" , round, roped pins were very popular worn on sweaters back then. I bet a mom or grandma has something perfect!!

1) a pink sparkley brooch, or a pink patent leather (or other) belt / sash / or scarf tied loosely around neck. Maybe also little pink socks.

2) yeah, go for the pigtails, if you want. I suggest -- not just out at the sides, but more towards the back of the ear area, but high up on the head. Curly ques, or wrapped up in little buns on top of your head.

3) horn-rimmed glasses, also called "cat-eye" frames -- plastic, and the bigger / flashier, the better. And, also, perhaps "overdone" makeup -- blue eyeshadow, red red lipstick, etc (and of course, the 'beauty mark').

Try and find a cheap, old pair of those "cat-eyed" glasses. You know, the ones that really point up at the ends. You could probably find them in pink, and if you don't wear glasses, just pop the lenses out and replace them with plastic. And I think pigtails would work fine with the costume.

It sounds like you have pretty much everything you need. I think pigtails would be fine. To add more pink I would suggest a pink belt.
