I am currently watching dr who what exactly is his sonic screwdriver and what does it do - i find it hard to believe it just unscrews things.

my little boys sonic screwdriver can only write but it comes with invisible ink too !

The sonic screwdriver is great! It's a do everything device. It opens locked doors, breaks open windows, repairs things, etc. Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee used it the most, I think.

the sonic screwdriver got him out of many situations with locked doors or other tricky situations it was to become part of the Doctor.
In the classic series it was destroyed by a Terileptil in episode 3 of The Visitaion,and was subsequently bought back in Episode 1 of Rose with Christopher Eccleston
I remember when Tom Baker was the Doctor and he looks straight into the camera and says"even the Sonicscrewdriver wont get me out of this one"

The sonic screwdiver can do almost anything, originally introduced as a quick get out device for any situation

I think it uses a sonic frequency to open the door but i am not sure.

I think it just emits a high frequency sound that effects the machines. I'm not sure but that is what I think when I watch the show.
