I am a clinical psychiatrist an I have a legal and moral obligation to protect the privacy of all my patients.
In my spare time I test antivirus/antispyware program to see if they perform as they claim. (I have tested every one that I have been able to fine free/purchase).
Stay away from Nortons and McAfee, as they are the very worse antivirus programs in the world. They find nothing and keep getting worse each year. Plus they will eat up all your resources.
I use "Avast", for nine plus years and never had one virus in the two computers that I use. I find the program to be excellent state of the art technology that is light years ahead of any other antivirus program free or paid.
You can download the free for home personal use at: http://www.avast.com Their corporate version is the same as the free version. They just make corporate pay for each program they download.
They will ask you for your email address, because they will send you a free key that is good for one year. After the one year is up, you will have to request another free key.
Avast updates usually two/three times per day. Plus the free version is automatic updates. You even have a guard in your tray that you should always use to open this program with. Plus their realtime background guard is exceptional, because the guard works and will find embedded virus in a webpage that you may open and have no knowledge that there is a virus enbedded in the webpage. Cleans in real time.
If you have your speakers on, you will always hear a male voice saying, "antivirus has been updated". If the background scanner comes across an embedded you can be away from your pc, and you will hear a male voice come onto our speakers and say, "a virus has been detected an is cleaned in real time.
You can rest assured that when the virus is cleaned it is not still in your system like Nortons or McAfee.
With any antivirus or spyware program, when a virus or spyware is detected is always a very good idea to reboot your system. Because the background scanner will perform a scan of your memory before your programs load to make sure that the memory is clean of malware.
Never had one virus in two computers with "Avast", in nine plus years.
For your information "Avast", is located in Prague. (Europe). I will tell you that I have found from my own personal testing that alot of the American antivirus/spyware programs purchased or free have hidden embedded spyware, adware, trojans or malware. Not being bias, just never found any embedded malware in antivirus/spyware programs that are made in Europe or China.

I've been using Avast for years and it works great. I've heard good things from friends and family about AVG as well (another free antivirus program).

I used to have avast on my machines, they are a bit dated back on releasing updates, you need a responsive anti-virus provider go with the big companies such as Symantec.. they have some outstanding products, they all have their pros and cons
It all goes back to preference
