Before the gold rush we were known as CALIFORNIOS. After the gold rush we were known as 49ers. This designation was lost in the 1950s due to the advent of pro football. Prune-pickers were the "grapes of wrath" immigants that came here during the great depression.

I lived in California for seven years, but I did not hear of a nickname for Californians, other than "Californians".
California state is known by several nicknames: The Land of Milk and Honey, The El Dorado State, The Golden State, and The Grape State.

Indiana is known as the Hoosier State.
California is known as the Golden State.
Does that mean we should be called "Golden Nuggets"?
I think "Californians" is a somewhat accepted term.

I'm also from California. My friends and I like to refer to ourselves as simply Californians.
