Help with information on capital punishment (aka death sentence) in the U.S.?

Hi, Im doing a paper for school on what a good 28th ammendment should be. my teacher gave us a few examples, and i decided on capital punishment, also known as the death sentence. I was wondering if people could help me find some good info on it, or tell me a few of the following things:

What states is it legal in?
aprox. how many people get it a year?
do people convicted in other states still recieve it in a legal state?
what must you do to recieve it?
and any other specific stuff like that. thanks alot
