The heterogeneity of the GABAa receptor means that there is a range of pharmacologically distinct regions within the brain (and periphery) this means that drugs can be more directly targetted to specific subgroups of GABAa leading to more precise effects (theoretically... just try putting it into practice) and therefore fewer side effects

Whilt many receptors have subtypes. the GABAa receptor is unusual since it is made up of distinct subunits that can be grouped in a variety of combinations. The practice of using this in intelligent drug design is very much harder than the theory may suggest
