If your surround sound receiver has an RCA "phono" input with a grounding connection, you can successfully connect your turntable. However, don't expect to listen to your records in 5.1 surround. Vinyl records were not created to be heard through six speakers. Also, if you try plugging in your turntable into say an "AUX" input or other device like a "DAT," "CD" or "TAPE" input, your records won't sound right ... all the low frequency information will be gone.

If you're talking about a standard turntable, I'm pretty sure there's a grounding connection on the back of most standard surround sound receivers, I know I have one. Check there, and look for a gold square device, near the standard RCA plug-ins. I think your turntable will have something like that to hook up.
If you mean, how do I get modern surround sound from a turntable, I'm not sure if that's possible. Good luck.
