I've been with this company since January and they promoted me to supervisor in July. They said that I would be on a 3 month probabtion period before I became full time for real, with benefits and stuff, then a raise. Well, its been more than 3 months now and I have my benefits and everything.. but no raise..

I am sort of a passive, shy person and I dont know how to approach this without making myself sound bad. I was thinking about emailing my boss tonight to tell her how I felt and what I wanted.. should I do this or something else? HELP! I need more money!! I am having a baby soon and I have a house and bills that need paying...

Never do this by email! It would seem flippant. Take some time to chat regularly with your boss and mention how hard it is with the baby coming and all the expenses. Perhaps she'll give you the opening you need to ask. If not, work around to it gradually. Perhaps there is an unknown company policy about raises that requires them on a time schedule or based on work evaluations. If you self evaluate, give yourself a good evaluation and back it up with details of things you have done to help your team, dept., business, etc. Good Luck!

OK you are putting forward 2 reasons for wanting this raise, only one of them is acceptable.

(1) You were promised a raise when your probationary period was over - OK go with this, remind your boss nicely that your probationary period has finished and you are now waiting to find out how much your raise is...... this way you are not asking for it, but inquiring how much it is.

(2) You are pregnant and need the money ... NO NO NO!!!!! did your boss get you pregnant? NO - this is NOT your bosses problem, you can only be paid what you are worth to your boss and NOT what you want for whatever reason, it is your problem not your bosses.

Approach it with a knife. No-just kidding. Ask for a review of your performance. Tell them that you feel you are performing your job functions well, and would like some feedback (assuming you are doing good, in fact). After they say you are doing a good job, or even if they give some negative feedback, assuming it's mostly positive, simply say "I appreciate your confidence in me, and also appreciate the promotion. It does appear, though, that my salary increase was overlooked, and I am wondering if this was some sort of accounting glitch or oversight." That way, you are not approaching it in a complaining fashion.
