As we use more and more areas for intensive cultivation, the need for fertilizer increases. Fertilizer usually is high in nitrogen and potassium and phosphorus. Agricultural runoff, water that runs off the land used for plants, can then go into streams, lakes, ponds and rivers.

The fertilizer upsets the normal growth of plants in the water causing huge algae blooms. These add to the biomass of the body of water and tend to coat the surfaces of other diverse plantlife. They also shade the bottom plants so sunlight does not reach downward.

This algae can choke off plant diversity needed for smaller fish. The fish are part of a food chain that moves right up to mammals like otters and man.

Algae also can actually decrease the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, making it harder for fish to survive.

It is not just artificial fertilizers that do this either. Runoff from feedlots (where they fatten cows) has the same effect. Essentially turning the body of water into a sewer, unfit for most life.

Oxygen goes down, sunlight goes down, diversity goes down, actual numbers of any species goes down.

you can mainly say that the polution in the small (taking in consideration the amount of population og the world) amount of unsalty water is huge. this doesn't only afect humans but animals as well as plants need this water. the salty water isn't good for plants growth for there ph isn't what they need. animals like humans shouldn't drink this salty water. therefore when polutin either lakes or ponds we are destroying one of the most necesary resourcers for everything living in this planet
