Buy a new fan..
unless you're an electrician, and then you could get the fans electrical scheme, find where the electricity goes to,and install something like a variable resistor and control it that way..
but i somehow feel you're not an electrician..

I think the only ceiling fans that I have seen with a single speed are the ones that are used in business or commercial buildings. If you have a standard household ceiling fan and it has a pull chain for the fan, the switch could be bad or someone pulled the chain off and you can't control the speed any more. The switch can be replaced ( it is a three position rotating switch). The other person who answered and said don't use a dimmer light switch is correct. You should make sure you get one that is for a motor control instead of for a light. If you have ever done any wiring, and you have a light kit installed, you could separate the fan and light and install dual switches that will control each separately, or if you need to use the variable speed switch to control the fan speed. You will probably need to replace the box so that it will accommodate a regular switch and the variable speed. If you are not familiar with wiring and you really need the change, then I suggest you get a licensed electrician to do the work. If I was there I would do it for you free gratis so you could maybe learn how to do minor things your self.
If I can be of further assistance email me at usnret1976@yahoo.com
Good luck

As Fiberglass stated DO NOT install a dimmer, it will burn the motor out, Only commercial or industrial fans are one speed, you may have bought one thinking you got a deal, you can install a 3 speed motor control for that fan IF it is infact a single speed fan as single speed fans come in High speed.

I am assuming that your fan came as a single speed fan. Install a dimmer switch where your on off switch activates your fan, and it will act as a speed control. Of course your light will decrease also if the fan has a light built in.

A RHEOSTAT may work but will get hot in the electrical box. Do it right, buy a multi speed fan, they are so cheap today.
"Fibreglas" and "switchplate" know just enough to be wrong and neither can spell. I cannot understand why people who know nothing about the subject answer these questions.

I'm assuming one speed........FAST. DO NOT install a dimmer switch used for incandescent lighting! You'll burn up your fan motor. Instead, install a reastat designed for ceiling fans. It's available at most hardware stores.......or check out Lowes.

install a reastat or dimmer switch, but you`d be better off getting a new fan unless this one means something to you.
