There are close to 300,000 different species of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and all of them start out as a caterpillar. They lay many eggs each (females of course) and most do not make it to adulthood so I'd guess around 400 billion.

Much too many. Perhaps we desperately need a federal program that will protect these poor creatures. ;-)

No one knows. The birds,spiders and wasps feeding on them don't file reports every time they kill one.
