It is not possible to protect ideas but rather the representation of that idea.

To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what else the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Patent It Yourself (11th Edition) by David Pressman
* Patents and How to Get One : A Practical Handbook by U.S. Department of Commerce
* How To Make Patent Drawings Yourself: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Jack Lo
* The Inventor's Notebook: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Fred E. Grissom

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

A copyright something, it has to be in a media that is available to the senses of sight or hearing. You can not copyright a product - you tradmark that or patent it.

You use a copyright to secure ownership for a book, poem, picture, book, etc. You can't really copyright an idea. However, if you are building something new and unique, then you get a patent on it, which means you own the idea for that product.

Copyright (note spelling) is just for works of art...books and the like. You mean a patent. You do the product, not the idea. Google US Patent Office.

Copyright is (in simple terms) for printed works. You're going to need a patent. And yes, you will need a patent search. The process is not cheap.

Also, if you were considering one of those "we'll get your invention patented" companies, you're better of just burning whatever money you do have.

Anything you unique produce is automatically copyrighted, but typically you add "Copyright 2006 [your name or company]" at the bottom to inform people you are enforcing the copyright.

For example, if a person films their own movie they automatically have copyright control over it, without any paperwork or anything. They typically add copyright notices to warn people that they will seek legal action against someone who violates their copyright. But they aren't required to add copyright notices for something to be copyrighted.
