When a person chooses to start smoking, then I suppose they're a victim of their own stupidity or ignorance. They continue to make a choice each and every time they choose to light up another cancer stick. Every time they light one up, they choose to take one minute off of their life. No only are they NOT victims of smoking they are being selfish towards loved ones who care about them. They CHOOSE to light up and take another minute off of their life, rather than choosing to live a healthier life.

My husband smokes and he chooses not to quit, even though he knows how bad it is for him and that he really should quit. He has made a conscious decision to choose smoking over quitting and being healthy.

So, no ... smokers are not victims of smoking. They are victims of weakness because they choose not to be strong enough to quit.

The operative word is choose, and since a smoker chooses to smoke, no a smoker is not a victim. Stupid, but not a victim. Every drag is a choice. Every cigarette is a choice. And you can make different choices. I was a smoker and now I choose differently. Even while smoking, I took total responsibility for my choice. I just didn't realize how stupid it was until I totally and completely quit and have found something SO much better.

To be fair, smoking did for me, and probably does for others serve a purpose and a function. It's just that purpose is now fulfilled so much more completely with the divine love, and self esteem that I have found since quitting. It's a trap and a lie. A person thinks they're getting satisfaction or filling a need, but that satisfaction or need is as transitory as the time until the next cigarette fix. And the cycle goes on and on. There's a better way.

The secret to quitting though is NOT to focus on quitting. Sound like a paradox? Find something you want more, then go for THAT.
I wasn't motivated by health, although I have gotten healthier since quitting. I was motivated by love, and would do almost anything for that love. And now that I have quit, I find the love. So, whatever it is that is moves you instead of smoking, do that instead.

If you are a smoker, you will quit when you're ready. It has to come from inside you, and not from anyone else. Good luck, all I can tell you from personal experience is that it is worth it to quit.

That's like asking if a murderer is innocent because he feels sorry for what he did. In life we all have choices, my choice is not to smoke and I do not hang out in places that people smoke. I am not anti smoker but it plays havoc with my sinuses and gives me a headache so I choose to stay away just as those who CHOOSE to, smoke.

Now it is addictive and yes, the manufacturers from years ago should have been more upfront in what was in the cigarettes they were making, its a should of, would of, could of, type scenario with no real answers or solutions because it is past, the nicotine moguls of the world could if they wanted, stop making the multi billion dollar coffin nails and put the money into helping those with the addiction stop but that isn't likely in my lifetime.

Its a question of will power, some people will smoke to suppress something else and others smoke to be cool or popular, if someone really wants to quit, they'll never give up trying to quit.

Just hold on a second...Being a VICTIM Means that you are powerless over what is happening to you ; therefore, smokers are NOT victims...They KNOW what they are doing can and very likely will either kill or maim them. They Chose to BUY cigs, pay taxes on cigs, light up and suck in the smoke from cigs...they chose to stink and stink up where they are...

Now their children and pets are the victims as they have NO choice about the air that they enhale in the car or in their home...sheesh!

Smokers are NOT victims in the generally accepted sense of the word. While the dangers of smoking were hidden for years, no one HAS to smoke. Anyone that says they can't quit, doesn't want to. I used to smoke...haven't in a long time....don't care either way. All of the anti-smiking adds by tobacco companies...no one listens to them....everyone knows that they are only putting out those ads becasue the government is making them. The SAME government that said it was safe several deacdes ago, even kinowing the truth. If ANYONE is responsible fro the damge done by cigarrettes it is the FDA that said that they were safe, and required them to contain known, DANGEROUS substances to make them "safer". Victims, only in that ther were not told about the dangers by the government that was supposed to protect them. I say that EVERY person that has ever smoked even ONE cigarrette should get a $10,000,000 dollar settlement fromt he FDA for lying to us all those years and knowingly endangering out lives...attemptd murder, criminal facilitation, if it were anyone else they would be in jail right now....DOWN WITH THE FDA!!!!!!

Yes!! A smoker can be victimized because of his or her "CHOICE" to smoke.

In today's Society we are more aware of the risks and harm smoking has on smokers and non-smokers (passive smokers etc).

In my country smoking is legal to sell (tobacco that is), YET illegal to smoke in some areas, e.g the workplace, in Public Bars & Nightclubs, on schoolgrounds ( the rule for parents ). so my government is saying "it is alright to smoke but you're gonna pay a hefty price to pay for a packet" and our Health Care system is saying "no it isnt and here's why."

So in conclusion, A smoker choses a multitude of cancerous health problems making him/her a victim to themself (Addiction). The government takes the money in goods and sevices tax lining their pockets and Society condemns them for the choice they made.

Absolutely...not.

They have been well warned that smoking can be harmful.
There are surfeon general warnings on every box, every one.
They are now required to be even more obvious and vivid in the descriptions to divert them because it is so harmful.

They may be a victim, but not of smoking; of stupidity.

Stupidity is the most common cause of death...
