My friend and I were having a discussion about baby names, he was saying if you name a kid Bubba he is destined to be a football player. I pointed out the fact that plenty of people named Angel aren’t so angelic. So what do you guys think? If you name you kid something that means “flighty” does that mean they are destined to be such?

I think your name conveys how people percieve you. If you have a very common name, people compare you to the other people with that same name. If you have a friend or relative with the same name as someone new you meet, you compare them to that person, or instantly are suspicious of the new person if you don't like the original person with that name. Also if you have certain names, people just seem to automatically assume you're dumb or slutty or whatever. Also, in elementary school we had to look up what our names meant. Ever since then I often think about that and what my name means...My name means loveable or beloved and sometimes I think I have to live up to that, live up to my name. I think other people could be like that too...thinking they have to live to deserve their great names, or that they don't have to strive for much more, because ever since birth they were only destined for so much because of their name. Also, last names play a part too I think. If you have a strong and powerful last name, that could really help your self esteem rather than if you have an odd or hard to pronouce last name.

I think what you name the baby is very important. If a name causes the child to be picked on or seem in a certain way (ie: Bubba is a usually seen like a big football player) then it will have an effect on the childs life.

No a name has nothing to do with how the child is going to become in the future. You made a good point about the name Angel.. Most of the with the name is Angel are the most evil people you could meet...

sure the name makes a person some what. if it a silly name your child could have trouble fitting in and you must always say the name you pick aloud and try and and see if your child will be teased. like my last name is Daniels and I m expecting a baby in a few weeks now if I have a boy my bro wants me to name it Jesse the initials will be JD I worry my kid will be a drunk or something just to be cool. I know it is silly to think that way but that's what you need to take in consideration when naming your baby.

well, it does a little effect on characteristics only if the Name is meaningful... well, if you choose the name 'Joy' and as it surely has a meaning it do have some impact on the person who posses it which means the person named 'Joy' is definitely somewhat joyful or playful...

I was named ULLAS which means Happiness... well, what I feel from the bottom of my heart that I really like to see and make people happy... (I really do... lol)

So my suggestion is... Don't give someone the name Bubba (which means dumb in Bengali) then he or she might not talk ever... (^_^) (kidding...)

With care....

I think that if its an awful name it can cause self esteem issues as a child because every kid wants to fit in, which could lead to issues as an adult. But this is not common and a name does not define you just like being stereotyped by where you are from does not define you if you dont let it.

You know I watched a show on this and they said that it does. I can't remember all f the details (i'm pregnant) lol but it said something along the lines that people associate a persons name to a certain characteristc. For example. If you were to name you boy Charles. That is a very aristocratic name. But who truely knows for sure!

Each child is differernt. Bubba could also turn out stupid. You have to look at the "Boy named Sue" and Marion Morrson (aka John Wayne). You never know.

I think a name could cause years of unnecessary teasing a parent should be careful not to pick a name that is easily made fun of

actually that can be true depending on the parent and how they raise the child. for example, if you name your child marie thinking she'll grow up smart AND raise her to like learning, then it's a 50/50 chance she could grow up smart and get into a good college and so fourth.
