We use an incredible amount of oil in the United States. We have a lot of oil reserves that are not being utilized, because certain environmentalists fear damages to the environment. So, we are forced to buy a lot of it elsewhere.
Savings in energy with hybrid cars is not and will probably not in itself be a major issue in energy usage. Small conventional cars almost always get much better mileage then hybrids.
What is involved is extensive research in more efficient cars. If we don't make hybrid cars and SUV's, in spite of their flaws, we stand no chance of ever coming up with more efficient systems.
Our mileage has improved in recent years. A full size Buick Le Sabre can get 30 mpg at 70 mph on the open highway; I know because a few years ago, I rented one to drive across the US.
My Toyota Sienna gets 24 mpg at 70 mph, and it is a roomy vehicle which can seat 7 people.

The US depends on foreign oil because we consume significantly more than we produce. One of the reasons hybrids are important to the US is that it'll lower our dependence on foreign oil.

Americans like to drive. Thye have one of the highest per capita car ownership rates in the world. They do not produce enough oil domestically.
Hybrid car will use less gas. If everyone does, you can change the amount of oil the US needs for gasoline.

We drive lots of cars, use lots of electricity, and we don't want to use our own oil.
If we drive much more fuel efficient cars (like hybrids) our dependency on foriegn oil will drop.
