I went on a job interview yesterday, and I felt like it went really well. The president of the company said that he had interviewed a few candidates and would be interviewing a few more---and that he was going to make a decision tomorrow (which is now today) and call everyone, whether they got the job or not. It's around 3pm now and I haven't heard anything.....they open at 8am and close at 5pm. So my question is, what time do you think they will call? I'm guessing sometime after 5pm after the work day is over? I'm starting to get antsy, but I don't want to call them because I don't think it's appropriate. I sent them an e-mail today thanking them for taking the time to speak with me etc. etc.....so should I just hang tight and wait? I'm really starting to get discouraged. Thanks!!

You never walk away from an interview without first establishing how you are going to follow up. Otherwise you will end up being the prisoner of hope like you are now. It may or may not be too late but you should follow up now. If the job is taken, it won't hurt you a bit. If it is still open, you get your name in front of the guy one more time and sell your qualification again. If you hestitate, you are just being afraid of rejection. Think about it. Bring it to a head. In the future, you may want to try the following...

Verify where you stand before you go and have a couple of "trial closes" before you leave. If the guy says he has to talk to a few more people or he has to consult so and so, say this.."great, what do you think Mr. so and so thinks about a person like me"? Be quiet and listen carefully. The interviewer is about to spill his guts about what he thinks of you. Now you have a chance to stress your strength one more time. May be he misunderstood you the first time. May be you didn't sell yourself as well as you thought. Now is the second chance.

When that is done, follow up with the question " Now that you have a chance to talk to a few people, what do you think about my skills compared to my peers"? This tells you whether you are close or you are not even on the running. If the feed back is reasonable, the next question should be "Great, when do you expect to make a decision"? Then say "Fine then, I will give you a call back on such and such date. Is morning be good for you or afternoon be better". You just gave him an alternative choice but whatever he choses, he is committed to hearing from you again.

I hope this works for you and best of luck.

If you sent an e-mail, then calling would probably be a little bit too pushy right now, today. If you don't hear from them today, then call them first thing in the morning so you won't stress yourself the rest of the day. Calling tomorrow may even help you get the job because they see that you are really serious about the job.

Hang in there. The bad news is, they probably phoned the winning candidate first to make sure they would accept the job, after which they would phone all the other candidates and notify them that the position was taken. It's tough on the nerves to wait out something like this, but if you don't get the position, take heart. There are other jobs out there and you'll find your niche.
In the meantime, when five o'clock comes, lace up your sneakers and go out for a run, just to get rid of the tension, then treat yourself to a special dinner tonight, because you're a nice person.

I can imagine you get antsy, I already get a bit antsy from reading your story :)

In this stadium I'm sure it won't influence their decision if you call now or not. Still, if you get the job it's good to stick to the time schedule they made.

But..you should definitely call tomorrow morning if you haven't heard anything ! Also if you would get the job that makes a good impression.

Yeah just wait, at least a couple of days - you don't want to sound too anxious. It could turn them off and/or hurt potential salary negotiations. Plus, I've heard many promises about being called about interviews in a certain time periods only to be made to wait longer...

Maybe they have not decided yet. Hang in, the president could have had a pressing matter come up.

what you should do is wait it out because if it is a good career opportunity you would most likely feel bad if you call and say your not interested.
