Stay away from anything released by an actress, singer, model, or heiress. Those scents (generally, not always) smell cheap. I second Valerie's advice, but also ask for samples of the scents your friend likes. Use the samples when you know you're going to see friends and ask what they think. Remember, just because it smells good out of the bottle doesn't mean it will smell good on you.
As far as recommendations, I think Vera Wang smells like mouth wash, not the new one, but her first. Scents I like are Dior - Addict 2, Givenchy - Very Irresistible, Stella McCartney - Stella.

Take a friend along you trust to help you pick out your perfume.
Every scent smells different on each person due to body chemistry. Change scents with season also.

Anything that smeel like flowers. My favorite is cool water or bikini. They both smell fresh like you just got out of the shower. Also try using vanilla extract behind your ears, it drives men crazy....

I can tell you that Ralph Lauren Cool smells great. My husband loves it.

Your friends' perfumes.
Don't wear fruity scents. They're annoying and repulsive.
I'd stick to vanilla, sandlewood, and soft natural, earthy scents.
