i need a brief answer to the following question:
what appears to have been the cheif goal of big bussiness during the late 1800's and why did the governemnt beging making efforts to prevent big business from achieving this goal?

The establishment of monopolies. Theodore Roosevelt pushed for anti-trust laws that broke them up to a great degree.

Oh maybe your talking about companies trying to monpolies take over markets. So the broke up companies such as Bell Telephone of recent years into several companies...
