Easy one would be a necklace of bone, wood or beads. Any arts and crafts store or bead shop will be the source for all supplies.

To be more indian, use leather rope or leather shoestring over string or fishing line. We don't use clasps but we end it with seperate leather tie. Notice picture on how beads meet leather. http://www.bearlanderstradingco.com/amintuch3st.html

Basic warrior choker is good to make as well. http://www.matoska.com/graphics/ciha_1014_01.gif

Greetings!

Pardon me, but I can't resist having this conversation with you, because you do seem to sound well meaning.
The whole object is to make this a learning exercise. For example your fifth grader would actually have to research even (heavens forbid) read a book to learn about the American Indian, and the tools he used both for work and to perform rituals.
Now, I am not saying you should not help. The help however should be limited to encouragement!

I am a Ph.D (dual) and teach at a major University.
I assure you madam, that I see many students who followed the same path that you are leading your child down. When they reach me, that path leads them to McDonald's!

Good Luck

When we had that project, we made a travois, which is the carrier, they attached to dogs, and later horses. We went to the hobby store and bought bamboo sticks and leather strapping material and tied it together, and attached it to a large stuffed dog. Don't know if you want to include a live animal, but some schools might allow that.

Use clay (natural red if you can find it-look at your local craft store) to make bowls and pots. Use toothpicks to make designs in the clay.
