the port to connect the usb has fallen inside of the hard drive so I don't think there's any way around opening it.

Of course you just have to unscrew all screws from the external casing.
For an external HD (hard drive), it should be fairly simple to do but be extremely careful to avoid opening the section protecting the disks (doing so would cause irreparable damage).
